Great News for the Saskatchewan Beef Sector

Mr. Keisig: — Spring is here, Mr. Speaker. The weather might not be accommodating just yet, but the days in the calendar don’t lie. Spring is about renewal, growth, and the continuation of life. Nothing makes people feel better than seeing new baby calves being born, taking their first steps, then running with their tails in the air. Our entire beef industry, contributing millions to our economy, all begins with that little baby calf.

Recently, some great news has been announced for the Canadian beef sector, Mr. Speaker. Japan has opened their market fully for Canadian imports for the first time in nearly two decades. This is fantastic news for our producers, feeders, and processors, as Japan is Canada’s second-largest export market for beef. Saskatchewan cattlemen are world-class and there is optimism throughout the industry.

I was able to attend the 25th annual bull sale at Crescent Creek Angus, Mr. Speaker. Wes, Kim, and Wade Olynyk are fourth- and fifth-generation cattle producers in the Goodeve area. Prices were strong, excitement filled the sale barn, and some outstanding genetics changed hands.

After spring comes summer, Mr. Speaker. And after last week, I encourage everyone in this Chamber to hug their loved ones and load their barbecue up with a great Saskatchewan steak. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
